Insect Collections

Collection von Bonsdorff

This collection is a true butterfly collection, which consists of 900 butterfly species and approximately 13.200 specimens. Doctor of medicine and surgery Robert von Bonsdorff (1907 - 1992) endowed his original, 10.393 specimens comprising collection to Lahti City Museum. Museum conservator Jorma Kuusinen replenished the collection to its current size. The collection is now owned by the Finnish Museum of Natural History. Most of the collection has been collected from the Lahti region and Tavastia australis. In addition the collection includes species from Lapland and the south coast of Finland. Collection Piironen

The butterfly hobbyist Veikko Piironen endowed his collection of true butterflies to the University of Eastern Finland and it resides at the Department of Biology. This collection consists of approximately 1500 specimens, which have been mainly collected from Joensuu, Kontiolahti and Nurmes. Sample photos of Collection Piironen can be viewed from this link.



Collection Saarinen

This is a true butterfly collection endowed to the University of Eastern Finland and collected by the butterfly hobbyist Kimmo Saarinen. This collection has altogether 1460 specimens. Sample photos of Collection Saarinen can be viewed from this link.




Herbaria

Herbarium J. Räsänen

This collection is a section of Juhani Räsänen’s private collection, which consists of dandelions. This collection segment includes e.g. valuable type specimens. Altogether this dandelion collection has approximately 1.200 specimens. The digitized counterpart of this collection has been deposited to Morphbank. Sample photos of Herbarium J. Herbarium Department of Biology at University of Eastern Finland

Collection consists of approximately 10.000 vascular plants. Collection includes also a segment collection of spore bearing plants. Every taxon group in this collection has specimens from different regions of Karelia. Collection Segment of East Fennoscandia Vascular Plants

Small, only 145 specimens comprising sample of the Finnish Museum of Natural History Herbarium. These plant specimens represent species of the Poaceae family and they have been collected mainly from regions of the current Russian Karelia, St. Petersburg and Murmansk. Collectors have been Finns starting from the 1850s. So called war botanists have also been collecting specimens during the Winter War and the Continuation War. Digitisation Statistics of Collections
