Biodiversity Virtual e-Laboratory

Biodiversity Virtual e-Laboratory (BioVeL) is an EU FP7 research infrastructure project that aims at introducing modern e-Science computing methodologies to biodiversity science. Its website is accessible at

Digitarium and the University of Eastern Finland is leading the work package for user involvement in BioVeL. This requires to foster cooperation in the science community to identify workflows that serve particular use cases, through definition, pilot composition and execution of workflows based on the deployed e-Science services.

Several science areas have been identified as being able to benefit, and also are capable of proving the utility of the approach and also having societal interest and impact. UEF work in BioVeL concentrates on role of biodiversity in delivering ecosystem services and invasive species management (both native economically important species and alien species).

The BioVeL project began in September 2011 and will last for 3 years. It will be a building block for important large research infrastructure programmes, such as LIFEWATCH and GEO BON [press release].
